About CNRCS
Purpose
The CNRCS serves as an organization to enable committed communities located in Northwest Calgary to participate and have input into the development and future operations of a facility that provides recreation activities and programs for residents of Northwest Calgary.
The Team
The CNRCS is a not-for-profit society that was formed in the Summer of 2008. We are comprised of 11 member communities located in Wards 1 and 2 of Calgary civic boundaries. The Community Association for each member community provides funds and appoints representative to carry out the work of the CNRCS. Our members are:
- Arbour Lake
- Citadel
- Edgemont
- Hamptons
- Hawkwood
- Kincora
- Tuscany
- Rocky Ridge/Royal Oak
- Scenic Acres
- Silver Springs
- Valley Ridge
The CNRCS is interested in having other communities become members of the society. We are also interested in forming partnerships with other community organizations that have an interest in the Northwest Recreation Centre project. Please email us at cnrcs.info@gmail.com for more information.
Philosophy
The CNRCS believes a future facility in Northwest Calgary should be designed to meet the needs of the entire community. This means meeting the needs of people of all ages, from toddlers through to seniors; and for those who participate in recreational activities or competitive sports. The CNRCS will set up a forum to ensure that all community stakeholders can provide input in the design and requirements for the future facility.
Current Mission
As the Community Advisory Group for the Northwest Calgary Recreation Centre project, the CNRCS is working in partnership with the City of Calgary to support the design and construction of the future facility.
In Fall 2007, the City of Calgary committed $70 million of infrastructure funding and a parcel of land to construct a recreation centre in Northwest Calgary. It is expected that a recreation facility similar in size to the Westside Recreation Centre or Cardel Place will cost over $120 million. A future facility must also operate in a profitable manner. Given the current funding situation and the necessity of operating the building in a profitable manner, the City of Calgary will require a partner to help raise funds and operate the future facility.
The CNRCS was formed in response to the City's needs; and will work closely on key activities (e.g., fundraising, assessing a needs and preferences study) to help make the recreation centre a reality.
Immediate Action
The City of Calgary is issuing an expression of interest in mid-2009 to find a partner(s) to operate the future facility. This competitive process is conducted by the City in order to select the most suitable partner. The CNRCS is assembling a team to develop the winning proposal to be selected as the operating partner with the City for the project.
